Canada

The scarlet maple,
Shield of life against the frost,
Standing strong and free.

This is a haiku that I wrote about the Canadian flag, and I wrote it to represent the triumph of the Canadian spirit over the often harsh winters of the country, for example, the early Canadian settlers who managed to survive the frigid winters and create a nation. The first line is a reference to the flag, as well as the abundance of maple trees found in Canada and the maple syrup that Canadians love. The last line is a line from the national anthem, and I put it into the poem because it describes the spirit of Canada so well. Since a haiku is very short, I chose my words really carefully to ensure that they would have a maximum impact on readers. For example, I used imagery in the second line so that people can visualize the red of the leaves against the white of the frost. Those are also the colours of our flag. I've used alliteration in this poem with the words "Scarlet" maple, and "Standing strong". This poem fits in with my theme because it shows the nature of patriotism.

  1. I really like your choice of words with the 'scarlet' describing the maple leaf. You could have used another word but scarlet gives the sense of a bold colour and of excitement, which I think really stands for the Canadian spirit, especially after the Olympic Games. Not only do Canadians stand strong and free but the maple tree also does! I really like how you created this poem. Very well done!
